Abu Khubayb \u2013 with a <em>u<\/em> on the <em>kha\u2019 \u2013<\/em> \u2018Abdullah ibn az-Zubayr ibn al-\u2018Awwam al-Qurashi al-Asadi, may Allah be pleased with him, who said, \u201cWhen az-Zubayr stood awaiting the Battle of the Camel, he called me over and I went to his side. He said, \u2018Son, no one will be killed today except someone wrongdoing or someone wronged. I think that I will be killed today as one of the wronged. One of my greatest concerns is my debts. Do you think that any of our property will remain after our debts are settled?\u2019 Then he said, \u2018O my son! Sell our property and pay my debts!\u2019 Then he willed a third, and a third of it was for his sons, i.e. the sons of \u2018Abdullah ibn az-Zubayr, a third of the third. He said, \u2018If anything is left over of our property after paying the debts, then a third of it is for your children.\u2019 (Hisham said, \u201cSome of the sons of \u2018Abdullah were the same age as the sons of az-Zubayr: Khubayb and \u2018Abbad. At that time he had nine sons and nine daughters.\u201d)\u201d \u2018Abdullah said, \u201cMy father began to order me concerning his debt and say, \u2018Son, if you are unable to settle any of it, then ask my Master for help in doing it.\u2019\u201d He said, \u201cBy Allah, I did not know what he meant so I said, \u2018Father, who is your Master?\u2019 He said, \u2018Allah.\u2019\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201cBy Allah! Whenever I ran into difficulty regarding his debt I said, \u2018O Master of az-Zubayr! Pay his debt for him!\u2019 and He would settle it.\u201d He said, \u201cAz-Zubayr, may Allah be pleased with him, was killed without leaving a dinar or a dirham, but only pieces of land, one of which was al-Ghabah, and eleven houses in Madinah, two in Basra, one in Kufa, and one in Egypt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201cThe debt that he owed resulted from people bringing him money to leave in his keeping. Az-Zubayr would say, \u2018No, let it rather be a loan, for otherwise I fear that it might get lost.\u2019 He had never been appointed to a government post of any kind nor to the collection of land-tax (<em>kharaj<\/em>) nor anything else. What he had came only from expeditions with the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, or with Abu Bakr, \u2018Umar and \u2018Uthman, may Allah be pleased with them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Abdullah ibn az-Zubayr said, \u201cWhen I worked out the debt he owed, I found it to be two million and two hundred thousand.\u201d Hakim ibn Hizam met \u2018Abdullah ibn az-Zubayr and said, \u201cNephew, how large a debt does my brother have?\u201d I concealed it and said, \u201cA hundred thousand.\u201d Hakim said, \u201cBy Allah, I do not think that your property will cover this amount.\u201d \u2018Abdullah said, \u201cWhat would you think if it were two million and two hundred thousand?\u201d He said, \u201cI do not think you will be able to pay this. If you are unable to cover any of it, then ask me for help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201cAz-Zubayr had purchased al-Ghabah for one hundred and seventy thousand, and \u2018Abdullah sold it for one million and six hundred thousand. Then he stood up and said, \u2018Anyone who is owed anything by az-Zubayr should come to us at al-Ghabah.\u2019 \u2018Abdullah ibn Ja\u2018far came to him, and az-Zubayr owed him four hundred thousand. He said to \u2018Abdullah. \u2018If you like, I will forgo it.\u2019 \u2018Abdullah said, \u2018No.\u2019 He said, \u2018If you like, you can delay payment if you want to.\u2019 \u2018Abdullah said, \u2018No.\u2019\u201d He said, \u201cHe said, \u2018So allocate me a piece of land.\u2019 \u2018Abdullah said, \u2018You can have from here to there.\u2019 \u2018Abdullah sold some of it and paid his debts in full and there remained four and a half shares of the land. He went to Mu\u2018awiyah while \u2018Amr ibn \u2018Uthman, al-Mundhir ibn az-Zubayr and Ibn Zam\u2018ah were with him. Mu\u2018awiyah said, \u2018How much have you valued al-Ghabah at?\u2019 He said, \u2018Each share at a hundred thousand.\u2019 He said, \u2018How much remains?\u2019 He said, \u2018Four and a half shares.\u2019 Al-Mundhir ibn az-Zubayr said, \u2018I will take a share for a hundred thousand.\u2019 \u2018Amr ibn \u2018Uthman said, \u2018I will take a share for a hundred thousand.\u2019 Ibn Zam\u2018ah said, \u2018I will take a share for a hundred thousand.\u2019 Mu\u2018awiyah said, \u2018How much remains?\u2019 He said, \u2018A share and a half.\u2019 He said, \u2018I will take it for one hundred and fifty thousand.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201c\u2018Abdullah ibn Ja\u2018far later sold his share to Mu\u2018awiyah for six-hundred thousand. When Ibn az-Zubayr finishing settling his debts, the sons of az-Zubayr said, \u2018Distribute our inheritance between us.\u2019 He said, \u2018No, by Allah, I will not distribute it until I have made this announcement for four years during the Hajj festival: \u201cAnyone who has a debt owed him by az-Zubayr should come to us and we will settle it.\u201d\u2019 He announced that every year at the festival and when the four years were up, he distributed it between them and paid over the third. Az-Zubayr had four wives and after the prescribed third was removed, each wife got a million and two hundred thousand.
